With much of the country hunkered down in snow or ice over the weekend, canned tuna is lean, nutrient-dense protein when the weather’s just too bad to get out on a grocery errand.

But a Monday announcement published by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) reveals that customers of several recognizable supermarket chains will want to check their canned tuna stock. A Los Angeles-based seafood processing company “has made the decision to voluntarily recall select lots of canned tuna products” due to a noteworthy food safety question.

The company Tri-Union Seafoods, owner of the seafood brands Chicken of the Sea and Genova, first issued a recall on Friday, February 7 of selected canned tuna products sold at various grocery store chains under four different brand names: Genova, Van Camp’s, Trader Joe’s, and H-E-B.

The FDA’s alert today noted that the recall had been issued out of “an abundance of caution” due to the supplier’s notification that “the ‘easy open’ pull tab can lid on limited products encountered a manufacturing defect that may compromise the integrity of the product seal (especially over time), causing it to leak, or worse, be contaminated with clostridium botulinum, a potentially fatal form of food poisoning.”

If you discover you have any of the recalled products in your home, the FDA warns: “Consumers are warned not to use the product even if it does not look or smell spoiled.” Although the FDA reports no illnesses in connection to the recall—and states the recall “is being conducted to ensure consumer safety”—they add: “Consumers feeling unwell should seek immediate medical attention.”

The notice states the following five-ounce tuna products are sold under the Genova brand name and may be found in these retailers and states: Harris Teeter, Publix, H-E-B, Kroger, Safeway, Walmart, and independent retailers in Alabama, Arkansas, Arizona, California, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, New Jersey, Tennessee, and Texas.
