A veggie platter brings some nice balance to your rich, often fried Super Bowl Sunday menu, but three well-known grocery chains are throwing a flag on health-friendly dips that were recently sold. A new recall throughout one region of the country may inspire customers to check their fridges for any of a dozen hummus products that may include potential unexpected contents.

On Wednesday, February 5, the Kroger website posted a voluntary recall notice for 12 different flavors of King Harvest hummus. Kroger’s recalls page says the recalled items are found at Fred Meyer and QFC grocery stores. Both chains of grocery stores are owned by Kroger and have locations throughout the Pacific Northwest region.

The recall, per the Kroger announcement, was issued due to “a potential for the product to be contaminated with foreign matter, specifically plastic.” An additional recall notice from Pacific Coast Fresh Company, the distributor for King Harvest, is linked on the King Harvest website’s Food Safety & Quality Assurance Team page. That notice further clarifies: “Due to being informed of a manufacturing defect on the plastic tub from our supplier … This defect could potentially cause a plastic foreign object in the product. Out of an abundance of caution, we are requesting the immediate removal of all affected products from shelves.”

All 12 hummus flavors were sold in 10-ounce (oz) containers. The recalled hummus details include:

The firm name and address listed on labels is King Harvest, Portland, OR, 97214, Dist. By Pacific Coast Fresh Company. The recall information does not specify how many total hummus containers are affected.

As possible remedies, the recall notice listed on the Kroger website encourages customers to return the recalled product to the store for a full refund; the Pacific Coast Fresh Company’s notice encourages consumers to destroy the recalled product and request a refund from their retail store.

Don’t let that discourage you from serving a few healthy bites this weekend.
